Ground Rules for Use of the MCIL Forum
In the forum you will be conversing with real people. Please be considerate and polite, just as you would be if you were talking face to face with another person.
Post useful and informative messages / questions to the forum.
Healthy and humorous debate is encouraged!
The purpose of the Forum is for sensible discussion of relevant topics around disability.
Please remember that the messages can be read by anybody and consequently MCIL will take action to remove any messages that it considers offensive or otherwise harmful. Discussions are expected to be conducted in a responsible manner.
Quoting
When you reply to a message in the forum, the discussion will be linked or "threaded", so you won't need to repeat the content of the original message. Only quote as much as you need to, and if you're only responding to a portion of someone's message, cut the rest out.
"Me too" Posts
A "Me too" post is the kind when someone says something that a lot of people agree with. People tend to quote the person (often over-quoting), with "me too" tacked on the end. There is nothing wrong with adding your support to someone else's postings, but try to add something to the discussion while doing so.
Opinions
Opinions are a touchy concept, so there are a few things to keep in mind. Respect the opinion of others. If someone posts an opinion you disagree with, first stop and think about whether or not you really need to post your disagreement. If you choose to do so, make sure you do it in a civil manner.
Make sure your opinion means something to the discussion at hand before sharing it. Not all opinions are equally valid. An informed opinion is more valid than an uninformed opinion. If you are going to say something, make sure you know what you are talking about. Some things are purely subjective and arguing about them does very little; they are the kind of arguments that go nowhere and get heated very fast. Think about how you can contribute to an interesting and useful discussion.
Flames and Insults
We are all emotional creatures, and it often becomes easy to react to a posting with insults or a condescending attitude. This is simply not acceptable. Discussion should remain civil, otherwise we may need to step in to take appropriate action.
When Forums Go Bad
The Forum has guidelines, and when those guidelines are broken we may step in to take care of the matter. We will not step in immediately, unless it is obviously called for.
Profanity
Foul language and profanity are not allowed.
Privacy
Don't post any private details like private telephone numbers or addresses if you don't want everyone on the web to see them!
The purpose of the Forum is for constructive, sensible discussion of topics relevant to disability. Any potentially libelous or offensive postings will be removed.
Comments on the use and content of the Forum should initially be sent to
